Chapter 70: The Breaking Point
Days passed since the battle against Arak, but the tension hung in the air like a storm cloud ready to burst. Jae-ho and Arson had grown closer, their bond deepening with each shared moment. However, an unspoken dread loomed over them as whispers of Arak’s return echoed in the shadows.
One evening, as they trained together in their makeshift hideout, Jae-ho could feel the weight of his powers. It surged within him, a wild tempest he struggled to control. He knew he had grown stronger, but the fear of what that power could attract gnawed at him.
“Jae-ho, focus,” Arson said, his voice firm but gentle as he demonstrated a technique. “You have to harness your energy. Don’t let it overwhelm you.”
Jae-ho nodded, trying to push the swirling chaos inside him into a steady stream of energy. “I know, but it’s hard. Every time I think about Arak, I feel it pulling at me.”
Arson stepped closer, his expression serious. “We’ll face him together. You don’t have to do this alone.”
But as Jae-ho looked into Arson’s eyes, a sense of foreboding crept in. He felt the weight of his own powers and the responsibility that came with them. The thought of Arak’s obsession with him lingered, and Jae-ho knew deep down that the confrontation was inevitable.
That night, Jae-ho lay awake, staring at the ceiling as doubts twisted in his mind. He knew Arak would come for him, and the thought of facing him again filled him with dread. He glanced at Arson, who was peacefully asleep beside him, the soft rise and fall of his chest a comfort amidst the turmoil. Jae-ho reached out, touching Arson’s arm gently, wanting to anchor himself in this moment.
But the peace was shattered the following day when a chilling message arrived. It was a simple note, a threat laced with malice: “Come to the old factory at midnight, or I’ll make him suffer.”
Panic surged through Jae-ho. “Arson! We have to go!” he shouted, shaking him awake. “It’s Arak!”
Arson’s eyes snapped open, instantly alert. “What did he say?”
Jae-ho handed him the note, his heart racing. “He wants me. We can’t let him get to you. I have to go alone.”
Arson’s expression darkened. “Absolutely not. You think I’m going to let you face him alone? That’s insane!”
“I can’t let him hurt you!” Jae-ho replied, desperation creeping into his voice. “This is my fight. He wants my power, not yours.”
“But you’re not thinking straight!” Arson snapped, his frustration evident. “You can’t just sacrifice yourself! We can find another way!”
“I won’t let him use you against me,” Jae-ho insisted, feeling his resolve harden. “I have to do this.”
As the clock ticked closer to midnight, Jae-ho’s heart pounded with fear and determination. He stood at the threshold of the old factory, the wind howling around him. The darkness enveloped him as he stepped inside, the air thick with tension.
“Jae-ho,” Arak’s voice echoed from the shadows, dripping with malice. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
“What do you want?” Jae-ho demanded, trying to keep his voice steady.
Arak stepped into the light, a predatory smile on his lips. “I want your power, of course. You’re stronger than you know, and I plan to take it all.”
Jae-ho squared his shoulders, forcing himself to stand tall. “You won’t get anything from me.”
“Oh, I think I will,” Arak replied, his voice low and dangerous. “This time, it’s just you and me.”
As they clashed, energy crackling in the air, Jae-ho unleashed his powers with everything he had. He fought fiercely, channeling his anger and fear into each strike. But Arak was relentless, his dark energy threatening to consume Jae-ho.
In the midst of the battle, Jae-ho caught a glimpse of the chaos around him—the destruction, the violence, and the dark shadow that loomed over Arson’s safety. The realization struck him like a bolt of lightning: if he didn’t end this now, he might lose everything.
With a surge of determination, Jae-ho gathered his energy for one final blow. “I won’t let you hurt anyone I love!” he shouted, unleashing a wave of light that enveloped Arak, pushing him back.
But as Arak staggered, Jae-ho felt a familiar presence behind him—Arson had come after all. “Jae-ho!” Arson shouted, rushing to his side. “I knew you couldn’t do this alone!”
“Get back!” Jae-ho yelled, but it was too late. Arak turned, a malicious grin on his face as he directed his power toward Arson. “You shouldn’t have interfered.”
“No!” Jae-ho screamed, panic rising in his chest as he launched himself forward, taking the hit meant for Arson.
The impact knocked him to the ground, pain radiating through his body. As Jae-ho struggled to regain his footing, he felt the connection between his powers and Arson’s slip away. “Jae-ho!” Arson shouted, panic flooding his voice as he rushed to Jae-ho’s side.
Jae-ho could see Arson’s fear, the desperation etched across his face. “You need to get out of here,” Jae-ho gasped, pain lacing his voice. “I can’t let him have you. You have to run!”
But Arson’s expression hardened. “I won’t leave you! I’ll fight for you!”
Jae-ho’s heart twisted at the sight of Arson’s determination, but he knew that Arak would only use him against Jae-ho. “You don’t understand!” Jae-ho cried, desperation clawing at him. “I have to do this alone!”
Arak laughed, a sinister sound that echoed through the factory. “You think you can protect him? You’re just a weakling, Jae-ho. You’ll never win!”
In that moment, Jae-ho felt a surge of desperation and clarity. He had to leave. Not just for himself, but to protect Arson from the darkness that Arak embodied. “I’ll take care of this,” Jae-ho said, his voice steady despite the pain. “But you have to trust me. You have to go.”
Arson shook his head, tears brimming in his eyes. “I can’t leave you. I love you, Jae-ho!”
“I love you too,” Jae-ho replied, his heart breaking. “But if you stay, you’ll get hurt. Please, just go!”
With a heavy heart, Jae-ho pushed Arson away, his own energy flickering dangerously. “I’ll find you. Just… stay safe,” he urged, knowing this was the only way.
As Arson hesitated, Jae-ho turned to face Arak, determination fueling him. “This ends now,” he declared, summoning every ounce of strength within him.
The battle that ensued was fierce, a clash of powers that shook the very foundations of the factory. Jae-ho fought with everything he had, but in the back of his mind, he could hear Arson’s anguished cries as he was forced to flee.
In the final moment of their clash, Jae-ho found himself standing over Arak, their powers colliding in a blinding flash of light. As the dust settled, Jae-ho stood alone, the remnants of his powers flickering around him. Arak lay defeated, but the victory felt hollow.
With a heavy heart, Jae-ho whispered into the silence, “I’m sorry, Arson.” He knew he had made a choice that would change everything.
